Hello Everyone!
I hope you are doing well. Today’s post is inspired by the recent workshops I have been teaching called Getting Started with Visual Journaling.
I absolutely love introducing people to the art of visual journaling, and one of the main components that I share with my students is using stencils. I love to sing the praises of Artistcellar stencils for their high quality of material and wonderful designs.
I have been using Artistcellar stencils for three solid years, and I never tire of them.
Using stencils in your visual journal is a great way to play with the layering process. Stencils can be your first layer, second layer, top layer, etc. In other words, they are versatile.
In the image below, I have a stencil as a top layer on the left page, and a bottom layer on the right page.
I am a big experimenter with art supplies, and I value the creative process over the end result. I learn so much just by allowing myself to try things and play around. I encourage you to give yourself tons of permission to create “unfinished” pages.
It’s fun to let go and frankly, not give a . . .. (fill in the blank).
In the image below, you can see how the use of the stencil helps to create a focal point.
One of my favorite ways to play with stencils is the subtle look left after cleaning off a stencil with a baby wipe.
You can achieve that subtle look, also, when you print a wet stencil (after it’s been sprayed with ink) onto another page. (See the right side of the image below.)
In addition to stencils, I also use stamps in my visual journals. I like to keep a paper to the side of my work area that I use to clean off stencils and stamps. This paper is often my favorite to look at after a creative session. (See the example below.)
In Summary
Stencils are versatile and useful tools. They are wonderful to try when visual journaling. They need not overpower a page, unless you want them to help you create a focal area.
Artistcellar stencils are some of the best stencils on the market, as the material that they are made of is strong and long lasting. The designs are also wonderful.
Remember to let go and have some fun with your art supplies!
Sending Blessings,
