Yay! We have a new series out! This one is nice and square and blocky and makes great texture and backgrounds! I've been playing with these for awhile, beginning with my gelli plate (naturally!) Here's what they look like:
Open Work
Deco
Tiles
Cross-T
Aren't they pretty? Of course I couldn't just show you the designs. You can see those on the Artistcellar Website Stencils page.
So you know how you can have a half finished canvas laying around and it's saying to you "meh." Well, I grabbed one of those canvases and just started some layering with the Blocks Stencils. And since I loved how the design team kept using crackle paste through stencils, I tried that too. Boy did I have a hot mess at the end. Now it screamed "MEH!!" But I did a little trick that my friend reminded me of... I tied it all together with Nickel Azo and Burnt Umber glazes. This is what happened.
But check out this texture! I wasn't sure if my crackle paste would even crackle, with the humidity being 423% (or so it felt) but it turned into crackle on steroids!
And hidden in between the texture-y goodness lay more blocks.
I sorta like this piece now. I call it "Cracked, not Broken" The original piece was inspired by a huge sidewalk crack I took a picture of, the end result is a little more metaphorical and reminds me of that poem about "cracks letting the light in."
This morning I was visiting Diana Trout's blog and saw this little tutorial on Twinchies. Well, these were tags that failed at paper marbling so I stenciled over them, cut them square and decided to try Diana's method. I first glued some book page words on the squares and covered the entire square in an Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel. I ended coating them twice to get a nice thick gloss. I then dipped the edges in a flat gold embossing powder and melted them smooth. I grabbed another half-finished canvas I've had laying around for YEARS and gave it a fresh coat of paint and stenciling with the same Tiles stencil, and mounted the little tile in the middle of the canvas. I coated the canvas edges in the glass bead gel to give it a little bling. The funny part is that the "Beautiful Exasperation" cracked when I tried to straighten it. I love delicious irony.
But wait. Didn't I mention in the Newsletter something about a GIVEAWAY? Yes, yes I did! I'm giving away a set of stencils and a beautiful book called "Art Journal Your Archetypes" by artist and author Gabrielle Javier-Cerulli. It is a gorgeous book filled with artwork and interviews by your favorite artists like Nathalie Kalbach, Orly Avineri, Sarah Trump, Jessica Sporn, Mary Beth Shaw, Seth Apter, and Tamara Laporte. Yours Truly has a little piece of artwork in there, representing my main archetype "Nature Girl."
It has a section where you can answer questions to figure out what archetypes you most identify with, and half the book shows you how you can use stencils and other mixed media methods to create journal pages to honor your archetypes. It really is a unique book, with a fascinating subject, you will be sure to learn something about yourself and then want to create art about it!
Gabrielle and I also got the chance to talk a little bit over at Google Hangouts and she recorded it for everyone to see. (eeek!) We talked about archetypes, art journaling, running a business, and other "stuff". Enjoy!
Now for the details of the Giveaway! Just leave a comment here about what you think your archetypes are. Or just leave a comment about what you think about the Blocks stencils and artwork. Or just say hi :-) I will pick a random winner on October 8th, after the Design Team has had a chance to show off their creations. You have to come back to THIS post to enter the giveaway. Only one entry per person, duplicates will be eliminated. I am giving away a brand new book and a set of stencils. And if I have more than 50 comments, I will be giving away another book and set of stencils! So share this post and encourage people to enter. Good luck and...
Have a fantastic week!

I follow you and use your tips and ideas often. I worked in the educational systems, Native American Schools, for 23 years, retrieving youth at risk in communities at risk. I retired a decade ago and have been working on healing self since then. I would truly love to be able to utilize your book or blocks. Thank you for the opportunity and for all you give.

September 27, 2016
The stencils are just in time for playing with my new & yet to be used Gelli Plate! I am drawn to the idea of blending the archetypes with art and just the suggestion sparks creative life in me! This is definitely a combo worth having! I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
September 26, 2016
I’m new to stencils, and gesso and multilayered artwork but one thing for sure, IT’S BIG FUN! Cool book and UBER BLOCKS!
Taking archetypes from The Tarot (Smith-Waite) I’d say Hermit and Priestess would be me. Obviously, I go back and forth and then I veer off into Fool territory…
September 26, 2016

I love the look of the block series and the crackle paste does look awesome! My goal for 2016 has been to try new materials, new styles in my art work and art journals, and I would love to give these stencils a whirl. I’m also very curious to see where the book and info about my archetype might lead me.
September 26, 2016
The archetypes I am working with right now are Wounded Child and Innocent Child, along with some kind of healthy compassionate masculine energy that I do not have a name for (yet). I would love a chance to win the geometric stencils and later today I am going to play with crackle paste! Thank you!
September 26, 2016
Awesome to see the creativity used with block stencils. I enjoyed the video chat as well. Book and Block Series stencils look like something every artist needs in their personal supply cache! I’ve been drawn to geometric shapes forever. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
September 26, 2016
I love all the stencils, can’t seem to not be interested in all of them I have used the cathedral corners many times, they are wonderful. I also just received the pods thing and am getting ready to work with those. Thanks for inspiring.

Love this! When I was in school years ago, I would draw overlapping squares. Pages and pages of them. THis is definietly my type!
September 26, 2016
These new stencils are especially cool….my mind is running away with idea possibilities. As far as archetypes that identify with …turned 62 this year so embracing the crone is pretty active right now…with a equally big helping of magical child. This new book sounds yummy. .
September 26, 2016
The new stencils are just super and your crackle sample is so very cool.

I’m not sure about my archetype, but I know I love these stencils.
September 26, 2016
This book looks AMAZING. I am so into archetypes but didn’t even think about art journaling about them/with them/as them. Love your stencil samples, too. Very inspiring!
September 26, 2016
How exciting. I LOVE the new block series and your artwork. All that texture is fantastic and the layers – so yummy. Thank you for the opportunity to win the stencils and the book! pick me, pick me….lol

Love the squares stencils, love what you did with them (especially “Cracked, but not Broken”!). I can’t watch the video right now since I’m at work…but I’ll take a look tonight to guess what my major archetype is. Thanks for the opportunity to win some great items!
September 26, 2016
Wow. The crackle sample you guys created is really inspiring. Very cool. I Googled ‘Archetype’ and got a feel of where I fall into the realm. I’m pretty much about creativity, exploration and nurturing.
September 26, 2016
I love the block stencils and what you’ve done with them. Just think of all the ways I could use them if my archetype was “Blockhead”. But I think my archetype (right now) might be the Child. Thanks for the opportunity to win the stencils set and the book; it looks fabulous!
September 26, 2016
I don’t know my choices for Archetype – but it would be rainy day energy if there was one. Give me a sky that is gray and trees green with vibrant life and I will be elated. Of course, Phoenix does not give me many of those, so my craft room is my retreat, with gray carpet and lush scents of paper, paint and gesso. I love all the varieties of stencils, and how you use them in so many different ways. Thanks for the inspiration.
September 26, 2016
I think I need to learn more about archetypes! I actually started to learn a little about them for my “business self” so I’d love to see how they apply to my “artist self”. I like to blend my two “selves” into my work to come up with creative ways to sell my products to my customers. I may very well learn that I’m not a split personality after all :)
September 26, 2016
Yay!!! I have been very interested in archetypes and have been working to study them through my art and I am sooo excited to see this book. I cannot wait to get my hands on it! The explorer and the magician both resonate with me quite a bit, however I can see bits of myself in so many of them as life progresses. Thanks for all you do! <3
September 26, 2016
I am not sure of my archetype, so I think this is a book I need to purchase or hopefully win. I do love Tamara Laporte.
September 26, 2016
I’ve been considering the book, even added it to my wishlist. It’s great to get a little more info from you! And I love the block stencils, especially the deco.
September 26, 2016
Lots of good stuff in your blog post today! I love what you Sid with the crackle paste and your new Blocks stencil series. So interesting. I use your stencils so often in my abstract painting work, and I love them a lot – the add such depth to it. That new book about Archetypes and art journaling is very fascinating. I want to dig into it to discover my own archetypes. Great interview with Gabrielle too..I enjoyed watching it. Good luck with your giveaway. xo

Archetype to me is a recurrent design or theme used to express a sentiment.
September 26, 2016
I’m a stencil lover and these blocks are a great addition to any collection. I don’t know a whole lot about archetypes, but would love to read the book to find out more. Thanks for the opportunity.

September 26, 2016
I love the block stencil. I love the use of it in the background and this book looks fascinating.
September 26, 2016
I almost always paint faces and love doing them so much. The typical face I paint represents my inner self and my emotions, or at times The Goddess. So I’m guessing those would be my archetypes. LOVE the stencils – you have such a wonderful variety. Thanks for the chance to win some, Lisa.
September 26, 2016
Love your new release, I can tell these blocks could be used so many ways on so many projects! The book looks fascinating too.
